South Korea's Major Holiday & Peak Travel Periods

  • Seollal (설날 — Korean Lunar New Year, late Jan or Feb): A 3-to-5-day nationwide family holiday. KTX/SRT tickets and domestic flights sell out immediately during the holiday lottery, though Seoul's royal palaces host traditional folk games and offer free entry.
  • Cherry Blossom Season (벚꽃 — late March in Jeju/Jinhae/Busan, early–mid April in Gyeongju/Seoul): Peak spring travel across Jinhae Gunhangje, Gyeongju Bomun Lake, and Yeouido in Seoul. Book hotels 2–3 months ahead.
  • Boryeong Mud Festival & Summer Vacations (late July – mid-August): Hot, humid weather (`28–33°C`) following the late-June/July Jangma monsoon; Busan beaches (Haeundae, Gwangalli), Gangneung, and Jeju Island are at peak capacity.
  • Chuseok (추석 — Korean Harvest Festival, Sep or Oct) & Autumn Foliage (단풍, mid-Oct – mid-Nov): Seoraksan, Naejangsan, Gyeongju, and Bukhansan turn brilliant crimson and gold; avoid unbooked intercity KTX travel on the day before and after Chuseok.
